Old Square Chambers is speaking, sponsoring and exhibiting at the ‘Association of University Legal Practitioners Annual Conference 2019 (AULP)‘ on Monday 17th June until Tuesday 18th June 2019 at Edgbaston Park Hotel and Conference Centre in Birmingham.
Robin White will be presenting a talk on Tuesday 18th June entitled “Transgender Rights in the UK, where next? Forward, back or in-between?” – Only a few years ago, under the Cameron government, it seemed that minority rights, including transgender rights, could only progress. The House of Commons ‘Women and Equalities’ Committee report, published in January 2016 proposed a move to self-identification of gender and a widening of the Equality Act protected characteristic of gender reassignment. But since then the rise of Trump in America, the bathroom bill and the rolling back of trans rights, such as those enjoyed by US service personnel, has been mirrored by a vociferous ‘gender critical’ radical feminist voice in the UK, with reactionary voices validated by the Brexit debate. All this makes the future direction of change much less certain.
Chambers is also exhibiting at the event and attendees will be William Meade (Senior Clerk), Graham Smith (Deputy Senior Clerk) and Phil Desmondez (Marketing Manager).
