Today, the Bar Council of England & Wales published Baroness Harman’s important report into Bullying & Harassment at the Bar which was commissioned by the Bar Council of England and Wales.
Old Square Chambers believes strongly that bullying and harassment has no place at the Bar.
Our members advise and represent individuals bringing or defending complaints and claims of bullying and harassment, as well as representing barristers’ Chambers and undertaking investigations into such complaints. Many of our members are experts not only in employment and equality law, but in professional discipline and regulation, as well as public law, which give them breadth and depth of experience in dealing with bullying and harassment in different sectors and settings as well as jurisdictions. Chambers also provides expert assistance in investigating such matters.
In addition, Eleena Misra KC has been a member of the Reference Group from the outset in her capacity as Chair of the Law Reform Committee and chambers continues to be deeply involved in this work not only on behalf of clients but within the wider context of the work of the Bar in ensuring that bullying and harassment simply has no place at work. Nadia Motraghi KC is currently Vice Chair of the Bar Council’s Equality, Diversity and Social Mobility Committee, and Katharine Newton KC, Deputy Head of Chambers will be delivering a series of lectures on the duty to prevent harassment as well as remaining one of a number of highly experienced silks who, together with many of our juniors, conduct investigations headed up as a practice group by Elizabeth Melville. Head of the Professional Discipline Group in Chambers, Nicola Newbegin, will also be working closely with chambers’ Employment Group to deliver focused training and initiatives in the coming months. Chambers benefits from the work that our Chambers Director, Sarah Earl, does for the Bar Council and the Institute of Barristers’ Clerks, enabling Old Square to stay ahead of changes in law and best practice.
