Chambers of the Year
Winner – Old Square Chambers
Old Square Chambers routinely features in the biggest employment cases of the year with “go-to” barristers at every level of call. “Old Square Chambers is distinguished by its unparalleled expertise in all facets of employment law, making it our preferred choice for representation in employment cases at all levels,” said one referee.
This past year has seen members of chambers appear in an important test case on the employment status of Deliveroo riders; represent union members in a first appeal case to consider whether an employer’s offer directly to workers during collective consultation with their union is unlawful (Kostal UK Ltd v Dunkley); in Mercer counsel looked to answer the long-vexing question of whether a worker is protected from being subject to detriment falling short of dismissal for participating in industrial action; and members successfully challenged the UK government’s so-called strike-breaking legislation that allowed agencies to supply workers to cover for striking staff.
Client service is an area the set always shines in, in comparison to others, according to one referee. “Their clerks are approachable, reasonable, and practical, with those same qualities being instilled into the barristers. They appreciate that client satisfaction is one of our primary goals and support us as much as they can in achieving that.”
