Please click here to see the programme which focusses on fires (mostly fatal) involving the cladding of tower blocks over the last 25 years which were precursors of the terrible fire in 2017 at Grenfell Tower, which claimed 72 lives. At the 2013 Inquest into the Lakanal House fire of 2009 and in the subsequent civil claims, John Hendy QC, together with Christopher Edwards, both of Old Square Chambers, represented the families of the victims. Grenfell showed that the lessons from Lakanal House (and earlier fires) were seemingly ignored: inflammable cladding, no sprinklers, building works which damaged the building’s designed fire protection, failures to maintain fire doors etc, insufficient means of escape, and so on. John Hendy QC is interviewed in the programme about some of these aspects.
